A Janitor Who Saved A Company - Remarkable Story!

I saw this clip on the internet about a guy named Tony who saved a company. This fellow had no business background. He was a regular every day person who decided to take the bull by the horns when he saw that his company was about to go out of business like so many had around him. Tony was inspired to save the company when he looked at his 20 co-workers who were facing unemployment. He didn't want to see it happen; Tony also needed to take care of his family. He was able to get the $25,000 for his share in the business. This is really an inspiring story. It would be my prayer that other employees in our country who face these kinds of challenges would band together to keep companies open that may be going down.

Let Religious Liberty Ring

The recent decision by the Ninth Circuit was the correct decision. I was glad that Proposition 8 was overturned by the court. America is a civil law country rather than a country of theological laws and dictates. This country is governed by the Constitution which provides for the separation of Church and State. Whether one agrees or disagrees with same sex marriage is not the issue. The Constitution is in place to protect the minority group against the majority which the Ninth Circuit realizes. As a Seventh-day Adventist I understand this because I belong to a small group that benefits from the protections guaranteed under the Constitution. I want it to continue to be this way. I am disappointed when others try to impose their religious ideology and beliefs on others because they have a different point of view. This is what makes America great that people can choose their philosophy of life that works for them. I saw this clip featuring Adventist university professors and ministers discussing Proposition 8. It was very interesting.

A Song Sung by Pam Tillis and Kris Thomas About Elvis Presley and Martin Luther King

This is an interesting piece of music called "Two Kings" sung by singers Pam Tillis and Kris Thomas. It is song written by Pam Tillis and Brenda O'Brien about Martin Luther King and Elvis Presley. I would have never expected such a pairing of the two in song because their lives seemed so different although both were born in the south and lived around the same time. I wonder what other people think of the pairing of the two in this song "Two Kings."

Enjoy the Moments Before Us

As we enter 2012, we are 12 days into it. How is the year going thus far? What has been working so far? Do you need to make any adjustments? If so, what adjustments do you think you need to make? The biggest adjustment for me thus far is to remember to marinate each day. I don't always allow myself to marinate the day. I want to more fully live each day rather than cheat myself. I find that sometimes the days can go so quickly that awareness and the full enjoyment of the day is sometimes missing. In order to be more aware, I will spend time slowing myself down. As I type this blog, I am taking deeper breathes. I am picturing greater internal calmness. I am recognizing that life is good because I am alive. I am accepting that life is learning to live in the moment rather than always continually leaping ahead. Let all of us learn to enjoy the moments that are before us. This can bring great satisfaction to life.

Hunger in Somalia

I caught this video while listening to another news story. It was a reminder for me that I can become so cocooned in my own world that I forget the magnitude of hunger and poverty that exists in other places of the world and even in my own country for my brothers and sisters who long for the basics. I see a video like this, and I ask myself these questions: "How can I help more on the war on hunger?" "What would God have me do with how he has blessed me?"
"How do we end hunger in a world where people in some parts of the world have so much and others have so little?"

Welcome

I want to welcome you to Conversations with Dex. I hope you will read the posted blogs, and give your responses. I like reading what you have to say, even if you have a different opinion. This is ok, and it is healthy to be able to think your own thoughts. You will also find pictures on my blog that I think you will enjoy. You will also find art work posted on this website.

Thanks,

I work as a pastor of the Haw River and New Life Fellowship Seventh-day Adventist churches in Haw River and Chapel Hill, North Carolina. I also have an interest in the law, coaching people, art, music and people. I don't believe that people can be defined in neat little packages, although this is how we typically like to define people. I surprise people sometimes with my opinions because it is not what they are expecting. I believe my ideology comes from traveling outside of America early on, having parents who did not force a world view on me, people who provided a well balanced view about life, education and the recognition that we are all in process as human beings.
